SIMPLE JELLYFISH STING TREATMENT - How to Treat a Jellyfish Sting and More

Published by Lars under Health, Travel

When going to the beach we all have our list of things to bring. Sunscreen, towel, boogie board, sandals, … Vinegar? Yes, vinegar! Nobody thinks that they’ll get stung by a jellyfish while at the beach or run into some sea anemone larvae which leave you covered in nasty red bumps or even stepping on a urchin spine. Well sadly it happens and vinegar is one of the best ways to ease the pain. I know many of you won’t follow this advice until you’ve been stung but if you ever have, trust me, you’ll do just about anything to make the pain stop. To do so simply soak the injured area in vinegar for at least 15-30 minutes and you’ll notice a HUGE difference. Good luck and have fun at the beach!

Help Preventing Jet Lag - New Study, New Advice

Published by Lars under Health, How to, Personal Development, Travel

Jet lag is rough! I’m sure if you’ve traveled before you’ve felt the effects of jet lag! Sadly, the more time zones you cross during your flight means not only the greater the adventure, but also the more jet lag you’re likely to experience. The negative effects of jet lag will leave travelers with the following effects:

  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Disorientation
  • Swollen hands and feet
  • Headaches
  • Digestive problems
  • Lightheadedness

Strangely enough jet lag effects women more than men. Obviously not in all cases but in most cases it’s true. Scientists believe estrogen to be the culprit. According to scientists estrogen is also behind chronic nagging but let’s leave that to another post. Just kidding ladies!

Another strange but true aspect of jet lag is that most people are more affected when traveling from west to east. This may be because flights from west to east are counter to the circadian rhythm. Most people have a circadian period which is a bit longer than 24 hours, making it easier to stay up later than to get up earlier. So how to combat Jet Lag you ask? Well there’s a million “tips” out there and lot’s of good advice but here’s something new you haven’t heard. First though, let’s cover the basics on how to help reduce jet lag.

  • Drink Plenty of Water Before Your Trip
  • Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol on Your Flight
  • Sleep on the Plane if it’s Nighttime at Your Destination
  • Stay Awake on the Plane if it’s Daytime at Your Destination
  • Relax on Your First Day!
  • Take Supplements! There’s a Ton Available and Should be Listed Below

Now the one thing that’s been recently suggested by scientists is that travelers should abstain from eating! You’re body is at a loss, totally confused as to what time it is, what meal it is, and when it’s time to sleep when you’re crossing time zones. Scientists have found that by “resetting” your body’s clock by not eating you can greatly reduce the effects of jet lag. To “reset” your body’s clock you can avoid food for approximately fifteen hours. By doing so your body will go into a basic “start over” mode. Abstain from eating during your flight! Once you touch down, eat whatever meal is appropriate to the time zone you’re in and proceed from there. You’re body will naturally “reset” once it’s gotten it’s first meal of the day!

Happy Traveling!

SAVE MONEY ON GAS - Make the Most of it at the Pump

Published by Lars under How to, Travel

With gas prices soaring we’re all looking for ways to maximize our miles per gallon and save money at the pump. These tips will also help you maximize your miles per gallon and thus make your car more efficient, helping save our environment. Here are some very simple ways to save money without having to go out and buy a hybrid. (Which wouldn’t be a bad idea at this point!)

  • *Best Money Saving Tip* Use Discount Gasoline Credit Cards

One of the best ways to save money at the pump is to use a gasoline credit card. One of the best I’ve found is the Discover Open Road Credit Card that can save you a full 5% every time you fill up or have automotive work done. You can click here to check out the deal and/or Apply for the Discover® Open Road Card.
Saving 5% on all fillups will most certainly add up over a years time for substantial savings. There are many different discount gas credit cards available and I can guarantee it’ll be worth your time to look into it.

  • *Best Gas Saving Tip* Try to fill up your car/truck when you’ve still got about half a tank

Gasoline evaporates at an incredible rate and the more gas you have in your tank obviously minimizes the amount of air you have in your tank. Gas storage tanks have an internal floating roof which serves as a “zero clearance” between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

  • Tank up in the early morning

As you know gas stations keep their storage tanks underground. Overnight the gas cools and becomes more dense, so by pumping in the morning your gallon goes a bit further. Pumping in the heat of the day the fluid has expanded and the gallon you’re paying for may not quite be a gallon because gas stations do not have temperature compensation units in place.

  • Pump your gas on the lowest setting possible

There are three different levels at which you can pump your gas. By pumping your gas on the lowest setting you are minimizing the vapors created. All gas pumps have vapor returns and more vapor is created when pumped at high speeds. You’re charged for it, but the vapor is sucked back into the service stations fuel tank so you’re not really getting your money’s worth! Pumping slower = saving money.

  • Remove all excess items from your car

You may think it’s not that big of a difference but driving around for a year with say, a set of golf clubs constantly in your trunk will most certainly add up. Every time you have to stop and start your car you’re having to move those clubs too!

  • Do not fill up your car or truck when a gasoline truck is refilling the stations tanks

This tip won’t necessarily increase your mpg but it’ll save your car. When a gasoline tanker truck is refilling the storage tanks at your favorite gas station and you need to fill up, just keep on driving. When a service station’s tank is being refilled the gas inside the tank is being stirred up. All tanks are going to have a small amount of dirt in them that will have settled to the bottom of the tank. When the service station’s tank is being refilled this dirt will be more likely to be floating around in the tank and you can actually pump some into your own car or trucks gas tank. You don’t have to be a genius to know that dirt in your car’s tank isn’t good

  • Check Your Tire Pressure

Your car’s owner manual should have a section telling you what tire pressure your tires should be at. By keeping your car’s tires properly pressurized you will easily increase your car’s mpg by minimizing friction.

  • Change Your Spark Plugs

Again, check your car’s owner manual to see how often you should change your spark plugs. This is another valuable tip to increase your car’s mpg and save you money.

These are just a few of the tips I’ve come across to help save money at the pump. If you’ve got any others please leave a comment. You may also find it interesting, as I did, to know Which gas companies import foreign oil.
